Folding & Steaming
Spread. Fill. Fold.
Assembly
- Place a flexible, drained corn husk beneath the tamale guide board template.
- Spread prepared masa evenly across the opening, using the tamale guide board template for consistent thickness and leaving room for folding.
- Lift the template to release the husk, then add a modest amount of filling down the center.

Folding
Fold the sides around the filling, then turn up the narrow end.

Steaming & checking
A consistent masa layer shaped by the tamale guide board can support more even steaming and texture. It does not guarantee doneness: dough preparation, filling portions, and steam circulation also affect results.
Arrange the tamales with their open ends upward on the steamer rack. Keep them above the water and leave room for steam to circulate.
Maintain steam and replenish water as needed without soaking the tamales.
Check a sample rather than relying only on elapsed time. Let it rest before judging the texture; the masa should set and release from the husk.
This guide covers corn-husk tamales. Other styles use different wrappers and methods.

Do I eat the corn husk?
Remove the wrapper before eating.
